How much does SSM charge to reserve a name?

Can I use Chinese or non-Latin characters in my name?

The official SSM certificate is in Romanised Bahasa Malaysia or English. You can register a Chinese trade name (商号) separately if you want 中文 branding on documents.

We'll reply with 2–3 alternative names that follow common Malaysian SME patterns — so you have options to move forward without starting from scratch.

Is my information kept private?

SSM naming rules to know

The Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) enforces these rules under the Companies Act 2016. Your name must comply before it can be reserved.

Suffix is required

Private companies must end with "Sdn Bhd". Public companies end with "Bhd". No exceptions.

Must not be too similar to an existing company

SSM rejects names that are identical or "confusingly similar" to existing Malaysian companies — even with small spelling changes.

Restricted words need approval

Words like Royal, Bank, Federal, National, Ministry, Shariah, Islamic, and Koperasi need written approval from the relevant ministry or regulator.

Professional titles need clearance

Advocate, Solicitor, Engineer, Architect, and similar titles need approval from the respective Malaysian professional body.

No misleading names

Cannot imply royal patronage, government connection, or regulated activity (e.g. banking, insurance, takaful) without a licence.

No offensive or obscene words

SSM maintains a gazetted list. When in doubt, ask us before you submit.

Common mistakes we see

3Using trademarks you don't own (e.g. "Starbucks" variations) — SSM doesn't check IP, but you'll be exposed to a legal challenge later.

5Assuming English name = Chinese brand-name approval. SSM registers the Romanised name only; 中文 trade names are a separate registration.
